Your Interests

My dear heart Kate sent me the link to this article about a Michigan teen who started a C.S.A. in her backyard. I love this story, partly because any show of agricultural awesomeness makes me happy and partly because any show of young adult awesomeness makes me happy. I'm totally impressed and inspired by Alexandra's dedication to her project, which grows produce, herbs and flowers for 14+ people. So cool!

The story also got me to thinking about my own paltry garden this year. I've gardened since I first moved out on my own - and even taught gardening and nutrition to low-income schools. I always try to have something growing, whether it's in a large community garden plot or just some herbs in pots. I then got to thinking about the things we do outside of writing. And reading. And interning. And taking care of family and friends, etc. What are the things you do for yourself, the goals you set, the interests that provide an outlet for passion, for study, for fun?

For me:
  • Gardening (yeah, already said that)
  • Sports: playing them and supporting them (MLB: Angels; MLS: Sounders; NFL: Steelers; UW Husky football and softball - just in case there are any kindred sports fan spirits out there) (Also, just in case you missed Levesque's goal last night:
  • Kitchen arts: A upscale term meaning Give Me Your Chocolate and Slowly Step Away From the Stove While I Whip Up A Flourless Torte. Also, I haven't posted food related anything on this blog recently. But I also haven't been cooking/baking much. It's summer. I subsist on cherries in the summer.
  • Crafty stuff: Scrapbooking and sewing and furniture building and other general crafty whatnots.
  • Learnin': About heavy stuff, about random stuff. I'm a sponge for random trivia and a constant seeker of fascinating material. I could be a professional student, that's for sure.
  • Setting life goals: Like getting my pilot's license or surfing Hawaii or a million other things I want to jam into this short life.
What about you? What are the things you love to do when you set your WIP/edits/revisions/reading to the side and reintroduce yourself to the world?

Coming soon: Based on some of the comments in my R&R post, I feel the need to take a step back and talk about R&Rs in general. So (hopefully) by early next week I'll have a post up about what an R&R is, why an agent might ask you for one, what it means to get asked and what you might want to do with the suggestions given.

Have a super weekend!

Ooo. I just went through an R & R. It was a lot of work and stress--though the results are great. Now I'm waiting to hear.

AAHH sad but true story-- I was planning on going to the Sounders game last night but Dr Fiance was delayed watching a surgery or something hella boring so we didn't make it :( Glad we kicked butt though.
You know you've got me with the Husky sports but the Steelers?!?!?! Really?!?!?! I am concerned about this revelation.

I am learning to cook and I want a garden so badly! I love biking, playing field hockey, making plans to be a perpetual student and also make awesome life goals (next on my list: wade in a cranberry bog).

Also I am totally clueless to R&R. Pls to share your wisdom.

Good luck Connie! Hope the outcome is positive for you. :)

Mean Dr. Fiance! :P It was a great game, though. The Steelers is a family thing. My grandpa grew up there and played for Penn, so I grew up rooting for them. TBH, I'm a little indifferent about the NFL. :D Wade in a cranberry bog!!! That rocks. And they have some in Oregon. Hmmmm . . .

The world? Oh, right, that place.

Well, I know this fall I'll be busy with my new puppy! That will be a pretty full-time occupation in and of itself.

You have great goals--I really should think about my own goals some more...

I do not have time for hobbies (I have to carve the time for writing from the rest of my day) because I am a full time care giver to 2 disabled children plus a very lively healthy one. But when I manage to get a few minutes I love to make jam.
