This week's topic is the traditional end-of-the-month topic: What was the best book you read this month?
I have to admit that I've been slacking on my reading, being busy with eleventy billion other things right now. However, I did have time to read (and review) the Lee and Low Books' graphic novel YUMMY: THE LAST DAYS OF A SOUTHSIDE SHORTY by G. Neri, ill by Randy DuBurke. And I'm so glad I did.
YUMMY is a fictionalized account of the life and death of Robert "Yummy" Sandifer, an 11-year old who shot and killed a 14-year old neighbor, possibly in an attempt to prove himself to his gang member elders. The story is told from the POV of another 11-year old, Roger, who is trying to make sense of Yummy's death, but even more so, his short life.
The graphic novel is haunting and complex, posing questions to which there are no answers. The artwork was wonderfully gritty and the prose striking.
