| Children's: Young Adult | Kristin Halbrook's debut WILL AND ZOE, featuring two teenagers who, in search of a better life, run away to Vegas, but realize they can't run fast enough when they end up wanted by the police, out of money, and out of options, pitched as a YA Bonnie and Clyde, to Sarah Dotts Barley at Harper Children's, in a two-book deal, in a very nice deal, by Suzie Townsend at FinePrint Literary Management. | ||||
The journey to publication has been amazing and educational and affirming and tough and unpredictable so far, and I know it will continue to be all kinds of hard work and joy and amazement. To celebrate the sale, I'm giving away some books from my favorite people! Five winners total, one book each:
*One signed copy of The DUFF, by Kody Keplinger*
*One signed copy of Like Mandarin, by Kirsten Hubbard*

*One copy of Entwined by Heather Dixon*
To enter, make a comment on this post telling me what pop culture legend - like Bonnie and Clyde - you think would be amazing as a YA novel. That's it! For an extra entry, tweet this contest and link the tweet in your comment. I'm sorry to exclude my wonderful overseas friends, but contest is open in the U.S. and Canada only. Contest closes on Thursday, August 4th.

Congratulations, Kristin!!! SO HAPPY FOR YOU :)
hmmmmm... pop culture legend that would make a good YA. What about a toned down (or not!!) version of John Dillinger's story? I know there was already a movie made about it (yum, Johnny Depp) but still :)
Eeee, major congrats! I think a modern take on the Patty Hearst story would make an awesome YA novel. Hmmm...SNI? :D
Yay! Welcome to Team Harper!!!
Congratulations, Kristin! I can't wait to read Will and Zoe!
How about a reinvention of Typhoid Mary or The Great Chicago Fire? (Maybe the cow got a bum rap--what was Mrs. O'Leary really doing?)
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!
Congrats!!!
Jesse James. *nods emphatically* *goes back to MS*
So happy for you darlin. Can't wait for everyone to meet W&Z. <3
Kristin,
This is great news! I remember reading about Will and Zoe way back in the early Teaser Tuesdays days of YA Highway. I'm glad to hear they've finished their journey...at least the one on the road to publication. ;-)
Congrats, that sounds like a cool concept. I nominate Frank Andre, the Goat Doctor of the Sierras.
Oh wait--you said popular, as in people should have heard of him? He's more of a local figure:

Congrats! I'm so excited for you, and I can't wait to read WILL AND ZOE. :)
I think it'd be interesting to see a YA about Susan B. Anthony. She was an activist even as a teen. :)
Congratulations on your book deal!
Woo-hoo! This is awesome! Congratulations!
I want to see the Lizzie Borden YA novel. ;-)
Congratulations!! Can't wait to read.
Kristin,
I posted over at YA Highway, but at the risk of being redundant, CONGRATS! The concept sounds awesome (as does the deal!) I can't wait to read it.
As for the contest, I'd love to see the following:
YA meets NWA - How Dr. Dre, Easy E, Ice Cube and crew started out before they created their monumental music.
YA meets MTV VeeJays -- When Adam and Kennedy and Downtown Julie Brown were around, MTV was ten times cooler. I'd love to see a novel with a veejay/90's bent.
Best wishes again!
a HUUGE Congrats!!! =DD Fantastic news :) Hehe pop culture... what about a YA book about a teen on a reality show? which could either be really good or really bad :P
Congrats!! Can't wait to read WILL & ZOE! :)
I'm totally on board for some Lizzie Borden YA! I can picture the awesome already.
definitely Sid and Nancy! this sounds incredible, I'm a little biased with the main character sharing my name.

Ha, I was going to say Sid and Nancy too. How funny.
I love the blurb! Congrats, that's amazing.
Elizabeth Bathory! (Or is that too messed up?)
Kristin,
Congratulations! The book sounds great. Can't wait 'til it comes out!
Hmm...I've been on a Joan Jett kick here recently so how about her? I know a movie was just made about her first band, The Runaways, last year, but a book would still be cool.
James Dean and his first love would make a stunning YA romance, don't you agree?

Kristin, CONGRATULATIONS. That is *awesometastic* news. :)
Congratulations! That is such great news!
I think it would be a total kick to see the quintessential John Wayne character written as a young man. I bet he was totally written off as the screw up. It would be a good bad boy makes good type story. Of course we would need some romance and action to keep things interesting. Maybe even set it in a non-typical place just to allow for more imagination!
Or, we could also delve into the Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth and see how they would have fared if they were set in a young adult novel.
Congrats! That's so awesome! I can't wait to read it =)
I sort of would want to see Jack the Ripper. Or, for a less well-known one, Isabella of France (medieval queen consort of England and all-around BAMF).
...so I might be a little bloodthirsty sometimes.
YAY YAY YAY!!!!
So excited for you Kris!!
Also, what? There's another Leila?
I am so excited for you! I can't wait to read Will & Zoe! :)
I think a YA book about the Barefoot Bandit would be really interesting--especially because he really is a teen. Hmm... wheels are spinning now...
Congrats! Congrats! It sounds amazing!
Congratulations!
Congrats!
I can't wait to read WILL & ZOE!
And I think it would be cool if there was a Sid Vicious/Nancy type of love story in YA. Something dark and gritty w/ music and murder.

Congratulations, Kristin! WILL AND ZOE sounds like all kinds of awesome and I look forward to reading it.
I'm going to jump on the Lizzie Borden bandwagon... that could be a fascinating story.
Congratulations! It sounds like a fantastic read! Can't wait to read it.
Congratulations! Amazing news! Hmm, a YA book based on past pop culture legend? Well, because I like dark/tragic and I'm from Chciago, how about a story based on John Wayne Gacy, maybe from POV of neighbor or an escaped victim? Creepy-good!
Tweeted, too: http://twitter.com/#!/mjcwriter
Congratulations!!!!!
Congrats Kristin, THRILLED for you!!!!
CONGRATULATIONS KRISTIN!! Wow, I am so pumped for you! Awesome news :)
Huge congrats. Its so great to see your success. I have blogged about it on my blog today if you want to check it out: http://jessie-humphries.blogspot.com
I would like to see a YA Jesse James. But the Jesse is a girl!
How exciting! I can't wait to read this one! It sounds amazing!
Hmm... Living in the West, I'd have to say that I'd love to hear a redo of Billy the Kid or one of those other really big outlaws. I think you could have a lot of fun with that! :)
Congratulations! I'm so happy for you!
Kristin!! I went away on vacation, and all of Suzie's clients sold books while I was away! I should go on vaca more often. ;)
So happy for you.
Hmm. Billy the Kid?
Hooray for you!!!
eeeeeee. congrats, kritin! will & zoe sounds freaking awesome. can't wait to read it! :)
Congratulations!!!
Congratulations, Kristin! That is so exciting! Can't wait to see it in print.
How about the stories of child stars who skyrocketed to fame? I'd love to see something like Carrie Underwood's story of being a high schooler who just got on this reality show and BOOM - instant fame, instant money, no more privacy, etc. What's that like? How do you hold it together? Or, at some point, do you do the downward plunge, a la Lindsey Lohan, Britney Spears, etc.? *jots notes for future WIP* There's gotta be an intriguing tale in all of that mess.
I also RT'd: http://twitter.com/#!/JSFoushee/status/98795202306772992.
Cheers!
I think a book about a teenage Henry David Thoreau would be cool, or perhaps something about a young Emily Dickinson--why the white dress, why she never left her family...hmm...
Maria Touet
Congrats! Sounds like a great book!
